How to Remove Oil Stains from a Sofa or Car Seat

Sofa Stainer — fabric stain before and after

Quick answer: don't add water first — water spreads oil. Blot up any fresh oil, spray a fabric stain remover lightly on the mark, wait a few seconds, then press a clean dry cloth onto it and lift. Repeat until nothing more transfers to the cloth. Work from the outside of the stain inwards so it doesn't spread.

Why oil stains are harder than tea or coffee

Tea and coffee are water-based, so they come out with the right cleaner and blotting. Oil — pakora fingers, a dropped paratha, hair oil on the headrest — soaks into the fibres and doesn't mix with water. It also attracts dust, so an oil mark turns into a dark patch within days. It needs a cleaner that lifts oil rather than water alone.

What you need

Fresh oil stain

  1. Blot immediately with a paper towel — press, don't rub.
  2. Spray Sofa Stainer lightly on the mark.
  3. Wait a few seconds.
  4. Press a dry cloth onto it and lift. Fold to a clean side each time.
  5. Repeat until the cloth comes away clean.

Old oil stain (dark patch)

  1. Vacuum or brush the area first so you aren't rubbing dust in.
  2. Test on a hidden spot.
  3. Spray lightly, wait, and blot — expect two or three rounds.
  4. Let the fabric air-dry between rounds so you can see progress.

Car seats

Car fabric can't be soaked and takes a long time to dry, which is exactly where a spray-and-blot method works best. Park in shade, keep the windows open while it dries, and treat the headrest and seat edges, where hair oil and hands leave the most marks.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Rubbing — it pushes oil deeper and spreads the patch.
  • Hot water or an iron — heat can set an oil stain.
  • Soaking the cushion — it leaves a water ring bigger than the stain.
  • Skipping the test spot on velvet, silk or very dark fabric.
